Kuraray’s EVAL Team is in Nashville, TN this week at the 2020 Plastics Recycling Conference.
Kuraray is onsite, showcasing the many benefits of EVAL™ EVOH in a wide array of product applications such as food packaging, plastic fuel tanks, and agricultural films, and discussing how, in most cases, that thin layer of EVAL™ can provide the ultimate lightweight barrier solution in a recyclable product.
Kuraray is committed to supporting the recycling of its polymers. By collaborating with recyclers to provide education on how to effectively recycle EVAL™. It is our goal to improve the environment, today and in the future. This technical service work is free of charge, and our way of helping to ensure less plastic – regardless of whether it contains EVAL™ or not – ends up in a landfill or our oceans.
EVAL™ is a superior barrier polymer that enables metal or glass articles to be converted into lighter and more durable plastic packages. However, there is a misunderstanding among recyclers and many consumers that when a multi-layer packaging structure contains EVAL™, then it cannot be recycled because of its incompatibility with other polymers. While there are some sensitivities unique to EVAL™, recyclers can use scrap material containing EVAL™ to create a variety of products including composite decking, railroad ties, corrugated pipe, pallets, bins, and trash bags.

About the EVAL Business
Kuraray has been manufacturing and marketing ethylene vinyl-alcohol copolymers (EVOH) under the name EVAL™ since 1972 and remains the world leader in EVOH production and market development. EVAL™ helps food producers and distributors make packaging more efficient and avoids waste while conserving energy and resources, as well as reduces the total amount of packaging materials needed. EVAL™’s barrier properties excel against the permeation of gases and give more performance per thickness than any other conventional polymer.
Because the EVAL™ copolymer shuts out oxygen, protecting foods and increasing the time they take to deteriorate, it is suitable as a packaging material for a broad range of consumer goods. Demand is also expanding in other fields such as the automotive industry in the production of plastic fuel tanks, as it provides a gas barrier and contributes to the reduction of vehicle weight. In the field of construction, pipes made with EVAL™ are used as a substitute for metal pipes in underfloor heating systems. EVAL™’s effective and efficient characteristics make it useful in many industries.
